Red
This is a piece that really symbolizes a lot to me.
It was done as one of many expressions of pain,
in relevance to a dieing relationship.

I wanted to post it and see how it makes you guys feel.
I really would appreciate some critique,
if any of you feel up to it:)

It was done in 2009, sometime.
It is entitled "Red",
for some not-so-obvious reasons.

Drawn with Sharpies.
Black background is painted with Speed-ball ink.

What I see in the piece is some guy (clown) ripped your heart out with that meat hook and he has a cloud of anger over him.
ReplyDeleteAs for the actual drawing, it is very creative! Done with Sharpie markers and Speed ball ink is an accomplishment in itself. I've worked with both these mediums and they aren't easy. Nice Job! (You didn't need him anyway)!
Thank you, Theresa! You are not far off the mark, at all! The cloud is not anger, it is folly. Mistakes, and non-truths. I want to give people a chance to actually discuss it before I really talk about what the symbolism is to me. But I will be posting more tonight, about what this piece means to me. Thank you for being my ONE participating subscriber:)
ReplyDeleteI can see what Theresa said about the clown and the cloud and your heart, it makes sense. I had wondered about those elements. I am also intrigued by the female form being headless, and wearing a sheer nightgown, yet her "parts" are not explicit. It is almost as though she is like a statue or mannequin. As though the artist (you) are seeing this part of yourself as a separate self, or maybe, as a broad representation of the female population, and the heartbreaks that so many of us have had to face and will continue to face, as women. She has a quality of anonymity. I like that she is larger than the clown...for me, it shows her strength, and rising above the offenses and follies and pain, which I find to be so incredibly difficult to do.
ReplyDeleteoops, I didn't see the nipples at first! :D So...there IS some sexuality to this. That adds another dimension to it yet. Very cool. It is hard (for me) to address the concerns of heartbreak and love without sex being somehow intertwined as well.
ReplyDeleteOK. Twice I have typed a response and twice it has been erased. I will post a better reply tomorrow. I had a surprise visit from my traveling Rainbow friends...we have been visiting all night...and it is time for sleep now:)
ReplyDelete@ Sarah
Thank you for your insight. You are really getting the emotions and symbolism spot on!
It takes a small, unhappy man (notice the frown underneath the painted-on smile) to pull the beating heart of a woman out with a meathook. A heart that's been shot/stabbed TWICE through, no less. The nightgown (denoting intimacy) shows this happening at a vulnerable moment. Maybe even after revealing that it was a heart on the mend? There's also hints that this is cyclical (the storm cloud over the clown's head) as well as general (no head on the woman).
ReplyDeleteI feel really sad... :-( For the women who have to endure this as well as for the clowns who perpetrate this...
